What is Bloody Mary?

It is a classic cocktail born in the 1920s. The combination of vodka and tomato juice became very popular and it’s the most popular brunch cocktail to this day.

The classic bloody mary drink is made with tomato juice, vodka, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, lime juice, celery salt, and some fun garnishes.

Since I don’t drink alcohol, I decided to make the virgin version of classic bloody mary and share it with you guys.

The great thing about this drink is that it’s so full of flavor, it’s so hard to believe that there’s no alcohol! The pickle juice and Worcestershire sauce easily help to distract the palate.

The pickle juice gives a little complexity to the flavor. It gives the similar flavor you’ll get from alcohol.

Why I love this mocktail?

It’s so full of flavor: savory, tangy, spicy, and salty all at once! You’ll hardly believe it’s a mocktail.

It’s the perfect mocktail to make it advance.

You can easily multiply the quantities and serve them in a jug for guests.

It can be enjoyed with any meal or on its own.

Perfect for those who don’t drink alcoholic drinks.

Perfect for any party, BBQs, pool party, or gatherings.

Make-Ahead

One thing I love about Bloody Mary Mix is that the flavor seems to improve with time. This virgin Bloody Mary tastes delicious right away. But it tastes even better after 1 to 2 hours of chill time, or even better, overnight! As the spices have time to mix and mingle, the flavor becomes more robust.

You can make it in advance up to 1 week. That’s the bonus!

Ingredients required to make this recipe

The ingredients in a virgin Bloody Mary are the same as a regular Bloody Mary minus the vodka.

Tomato juice – I always choose to buy tomato juice at the store instead of making it at home. Make sure you Choose the Right Tomato Juice. When choosing tomato juice, make sure to read the labels. Certain types of tomato juice may contain added sugars. Look for a tomato juice that is with no added sugar. Many cheap tomato juices have unnatural ingredients too. They use preservatives to increase the shelf life. Always use organic tomato juice. My favorite is R.W. Knudsen Organic Tomato Juice.

Pickle juice – I always have a pickle bottle in my fridge. So I have used its juice in this drink. If you don’t have them on hand, you can omit them! The flavor is just as good without. It’s just a touch more fun with it! Or you can use olive brine too.

Hot sauce – I used Tabasco sauce. You can use any. Adjust it according to your taste.

Lemon and lime juice –

Worcestershire sauce – I have used the Vegan version of Worcestershire sauce. Its easily available on Amazon, whole foods, and sprouts. If you are ok with seafood, you may use regular Worcestershire sauce too.

Some spices – Celery Salt and Cayenne Pepper. You can adjust these spices according to your liking. You can omit cayenne pepper if you don’t prefer spicy bloody mary.

Garnishes – You can garnish it however you like it. I like to garnish it with Celery, Pimento stuffed olives, Lemon wedges, and cheese.

10 Healthy Foods to Eat When Cravings Strike

10 Healthy Foods to Eat When Cravings Strike

Many people get the urge to eat unhealthy foods, especially when they’re on a diet.

In fact, it’s thought that around 50% of people regularly experience food cravings, which can derail their attempts to eat healthy (1Trusted Source).

However, some healthy foods feel quite indulgent. This article details 18 healthy foods that can satisfy your urge to eat without sabotaging your diet (2Trusted Source).

1. Fresh Fruit

Fruit is naturally very sweet and a great choice when you get a sugar craving.

In addition to tasting great, fruit is an extremely nutritious snack. It provides prebiotic fiber, antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds, all in very few calories (3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source).

Furthermore, eating fruit has been linked to better health and a lower risk of diseases like heart disease and obesity (5Trusted Source, 6Trusted Source).

One 2015 review found that eating 300 grams (or 4 servings) of fruit per day reduced the risk of heart disease by 16% (7Trusted Source).

To make your fruit feel more like a treat, try dipping it in a little dark chocolate or making a mixed fruit bowl.

2. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt tastes creamy and indulgent, but it’s also really healthy.

It’s higher in protein and lower in sugar than regular yogurt, and it’s a good source of calcium, B vitamins and beneficial bacteria.

This combination of nutrients makes it a great food for both your bone and digestive health (8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source).

Moreover, topping your Greek yogurt with fruit may provide additional health benefits and nutrients

3. A Hot Drink

If you’re trying to watch your calorie intake, try making yourself a hot drink.

Drinking a hot coffee, tea or espresso after a meal can help you avoid the temptation of dessert.

It can also satisfy the need to do something, further helping you distance yourself from a craving.

Coffee can even increase the amount of a fullness hormone called peptide YY (11Trusted Source).

Peptide YY has an appetite-suppressing effect, which may help you reduce your calorie intake and lose weight (12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source).

4. Snack Bar

Although many snack bars are high-sugar junk foods, it’s possible to find or make healthy ones that can add lots of beneficial nutrients to your diet.

When choosing a snack bar, look for one that’s minimally processed and contains whole foods like fruit or oats.

Also, check the label to make sure it doesn’t contain any added sugars like table sugar, coconut sugar or sugar syrups.

If you’re confused by nutrition labels and aren’t sure which bars are suitable, you could try making your own snack bar, as in this recipe.

5. Dark Chocolate

If you are craving chocolate, you can try swapping your regular milk chocolate for a small amount of dark chocolate.

Dark chocolate that is made with at least 70% cocoa is not only delicious, but it also contains a high amount of antioxidants.

Additionally, including dark chocolate in your diet may reduce your risk of heart disease (14Trusted Source, 15Trusted Source).

However, you’ll still need to watch your portion size. While small amounts have been linked to health benefits, larger amounts will add a lot of sugar to your diet and may not have the same protective effects (16Trusted Source).

Stick to a small square or two to satisfy your craving.

6. Fruit and Nut Butter

Fruit dipped in nut butter is a delicious snack that’s popular among health conscious people.

Eating a small amount of nut butter with fruit can be the perfect way to satisfy a craving for a sweet and crunchy treat.

This snack provides all the vitamins, minerals and fiber found in fruit, as well as the healthy fats, proteins and beneficial plant compounds found in nuts (5Trusted Source, 17Trusted Source).

However, on its own, nut butter can be very easy to overeat.

To make sure your snack is as healthy as possible, watch your portion size and choose a nut butter that contains only nuts (and perhaps a bit of salt).

7. Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is a mild-flavored cheese product that’s low in calories but very nutritious.

Despite containing only 163 calories per cup, it consists of about 70% protein and contains good amounts of calcium, vitamin B12 and riboflavin (B2) (18).

The high protein and low calorie content of cottage cheese can make it a really good snack choice, especially if you are trying to lose weight.

This is because high intakes of protein from dairy foods like cottage cheese have been shown to help people feel fuller longer, which could help you eat less and lose weight (19Trusted Source, 20Trusted Source, 21Trusted Source).

8. Banana Ice Cream

If you’re craving sweet and creamy ice cream, you could try making yourself this healthy alternative.

Banana ice cream is made by blending ripe bananas in a food processor and freezing them for at least an hour.

This snack is not only creamy and full of flavor, it’s also much lower in calories and higher in fiber than regular ice cream (22, 23).

If you want to make this treat more interesting, you can add other ingredients like milk, fruit or spices to mix up the flavor.

9. Popcorn

Popcorn can be a great snack to satisfy your salt craving without blowing your calorie budget, especially if you’re prone to snacking on chips.

However, the preparation method, serving size and topping choice are key when choosing a healthy popcorn to snack on.

A 3-cup (about 30-gram) serving of plain popcorn contains just over 100 calories, but eating large servings that have been sweetened with sugar or caramel can mean the calories add up (24, 25).

Additionally, homemade, air-popped popcorn is much lower in calories than popcorn that has been popped in hot oil. Avoid pre-packaged microwave varieties, which are full of unhealthy ingredients and calories.

You can keep your popcorn snack healthy by choosing air-popped, plain or slightly salted popcorn and watching your serving size.

10. Vegetable Chips

Vegetable chips are another choice for those who are prone to craving potato chips.

They are made like potato chips, but they’re made from vegetables like seaweed, kale or parsnips instead of potatoes.

However, some commercial brands of these chips can be as high in calories, salt and fat as regular potato chips.

To be sure you’re eating a low-calorie and healthy snack when you choose vegetable chips, try making your own at home by following this recipe

Sabudana Khichdi

  Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana khichdi is one of the most popular fasting dish that is made with sabudana pearls, boiled potatoes, roasted peanuts and a few spices. It is usually made during Hindu fasting days like Navratri or Mahashivratri or Ekadashi. I share a Maharashtrian-style recipe of a perfect non-sticky sabudana ki khichdi that I have been making for decades.

About The Recipe

Sabudana also known as sago or tapioca pearls are made from the roots of the cassava plant. Another name for this plant is tapioca or yuca.

This is an easy and tasty snack and a good recipe to be made during fasting days but it requires little experience to make a khichdi in which the sabudana pearls are not sticking or have become lumpy.

When you make the sabudana khichdi, you have to adjust the soaking time as per the type of tapioca pearls. For some pearls 2 to 3 hours is fine.

Just cover the pearls with water for some time and you are done. So do soak the sabudana pearls accordingly. I have mentioned in the steps below on testing the soaked sabudana pearls.

In this step by step version of sabudana khichdi, I am showing the overnight soaking method. However, please feel free to adapt the soaking time as per the quality of tapioca pearls you have.

This khichdi is snack that I have grown up having umpteen times. It is loaded with carbohydrates and the proteins coming only from peanuts. Sabudana is rich in carbs and hence this dish makes for a filling snack.

 How to make Sabudana Khichdi

Soaking Sabudana

1. Rinse 1 cup Sabudana or tapioca pearls a couple of times in running water until all the starch is washed away. You can use a colander while rinsing. Soak the sabudana in water. The water level can be 1 to 1.5 inches above the sabudana.

In the below picture, the sabudana pearls are already soaked. depending on the quality of sabudana pearls you can soak them overnight or for some hours. I always soak them overnight since even after soaking them for 2 to 3 hours, they don’t soften.

2. To check if the sabudana has become soft or not, you should be easily able to press the sabudana and it should get mashed up easily.

If there is some hardness in the center of the sabudana pearls, then add a few tablespoons of water in the bowl. Cover and leave for 30 minutes more.

Note that the pearls have to be softened thoroughly. If the center is hard the khichdi will not have a good texture as sabudana will not cook well.

3. Using a strainer or colander strain all the water from the sabudana pearls well. Do strain very well as there should be no extra water in the sabudana. Keep aside.

Remember to drain the water really very well. Any water in the sabudana will make your khichdi mushy or pasty.

Cooking Potatoes

4. When the sabudana pearls are getting soaked, you can boil potatoes in a pan or in a cooker and keep aside. For pressure cooking, just add enough water covering the potatoes and then pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles on medium flame.

You can also steam the potatoes in an instant pot adding required amount of water.

 5. When the pressure settles down on its own, open the lid. Remove the potatoes and let them become warm or cool completely. Then peel and chop them.

Instead of boiling potatoes, you can even shallow fry potatoes and then add them to the sabudana khichdi.

6. Heat a kadai or a frying pan. Add ½ cup peanuts (moongphali).

7. Keep flame to medium-low and stirring often roast the peanuts.

8. Roast till the peanuts become crunchy. You will see the peanut skins getting browned or charred.

9. Switch off the flame and keep the peanuts aside to cool. You can remove the peanut skins if you want.

10. Add the cooled roasted peanuts in a small grinder jar or blender.

11. Using the pulse option powder the peanuts coarsely. Do not grind at a stretch as then the peanuts will release oil.

Grind in parts and for a few seconds as we just need to make a coarse or semi-fine peanut powder. You can even coarsely powder the peanuts in a mortar-pestle.

12. Take the sabudana pearls in a mixing bowl or a plate or tray. Then add the peanut powder in the bowl containing sabudana.

13. Also add edible rock salt (sendha namak) as per taste and ½ to 1 teaspoon sugar.

In fasting food we use rock salt. If making this dish on regular or non-fasting days then you can swap rock salt with regular salt

14. Mix very well with a spoon.

15. Heat 3 tablespoons peanut oil or ghee in a heavy kadai or pan.

16. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds.

17. Let them crackle and get browned.

18. Then add 1 chopped green chilli.

19. Fry for a few seconds on medium-low flame.

20. Now add the chopped boiled potatoes.

21. Mix and saute for a minute on medium-low flame.

22. Next add the sabudana + peanut powder mixture.

23. Mix very well.

24. Saute the sabudana pearls on a low flame stirring continuously for approx 4 to 6 minutes.

25. Saute till the sabudana become translucent. Taste a few of the cooked sabudana pearls. You should not get a raw taste.

Once cooked, switch off the heat. Do not overcook as the sabudana can become lumpy and dense.

26. Then add 1 teaspoon lemon juice for some tang.

27. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves. If you do not eat coriander leaves during fasting, then you can skip them.

28. Mix well.

29. Serve sabudana ki khichdi hot or warm. While serving you can also garnish sabudana khichdi with a few coriander leaves. You can also garnish with some grated fresh coconut.

You can eat sago khichdi as is or with a side of sweetened curd or coconut chutney that is specifically made for fasting days.

I am sharing below some tips shared by readers as well as by myself to make a nonsticky sabudana khichdi.

8 Festivals and Fairs of Gujarat, India Worth Visiting

8 Festivals and Fairs of Gujarat, India Worth Visiting

Every year, the Indian state of Gujarat hosts a plethora of vibrant festivals to celebrate its rich cultural heritage. Here are the top 10 events worth visiting.

1.Rann Utsav

Set on the immaculate white salt marshes of the Great Rann of Kutch, Rann Utsav is a true wonderland for folk music and dance lovers. The festival features folk dance (Tippani, Garba and Hallisaka), drama, musical performances, handicraft bazaars, local art, wildlife safari tours, authentic Kutchi cuisine as well as adventure activities such as camel rides, hot air balloon rides, rifle shooting, paramotoring and ATV rides. There are hundreds of AC and non-AC tents set up on the fringe of the bordering village of Dhordo if you’re planning to stay overnight.

2.Navratri

Held over nine nights, Navratri is the world’s longest dance festival that honours feminine divinity. During the 10-day Hindu celebration, nine forms of the Hindu goddess Durga Devi are worshipped. People fast and perform popular folk dances – Garba and Dandiya – while dressed in elaborate ethnic Gujarati outfits. On the 10th day, another Hindu festival, Dussehra, is celebrated to rejoice the victory of good over evil.

3.International Kite Festival (Uttarayan)

The International Kite Festival draws droves of tourists, talented kite flyers and designers from around the world to show off their skills and unique creations. You’ll find thousands of kites of all sorts of colours, shapes and sizes adorning the blue winter sky. In the evening, kites with illuminated paper lanterns (tukkals) are flown and held aloft. Conforming to the Hindu calendar, this festival also marks the end of winter and the beginning of warmer months.

4.Shamlaji Fair

Held on the eve of Kartik Purnima – a festival dedicated to the worship of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu – the annual Shamlaji Fair is celebrated on the banks of the holy river Meshwo, near the Shamlaji Temple. The three-week-long fair sees thousands of devotees gathering together from across the country to bathe in holy waters and seek their god’s blessings. While some devotees make their way to the Shamlaji shrine by camel carts, bus or car, others prefer to come on foot, singing hymns of Lord Vishnu and carrying religious banners. The fair is also used as an opportunity to trade silver ornaments, cloth and metalware.

5.Bhavnath Mahadev Mela

Bhavnath Mahadev Mela centres on the Hindu deity Shiva. On the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri, the fair begins with a procession of sages riding on elephants and blowing conch shells, heading towards the Bhavnath Mahadev Temple to seek the blessings of their god. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself visits the temple during this fair. Held over five days, it involves music, dance, prayers, arts and crafts stalls and free meals. As part of the age-old ritual, pilgrims perform parikrama, or circumambulation, around the Girnar Hill before visiting the temple.

6.Modhera Dance Festival

Set within the grounds of the majestic Sun Temple in Gujarat, the Modhera Dance Festival is an annual celebration of classical Indian dance and music. Also known as Uttarardh Mahotsavis, this three-day celebration welcomes renowned performers from across the country, with dance forms such as Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak on display, among others.

7.Bhadrapad Fair

Dedicated to Goddess Ambaji, the Bhadrapad Fair is held at the Ambaji Temple, where a representation of the deity is a triangular object called Vishwa Yantra. During the day, dedicated disciples of the goddess gather at the temple to seek her blessings, perform puja (worship) and read the Saptshati (700 prayer verses). By evening, the fair will host folk dances (Bhavai and Garba), musical performances, cultural programs, merry-go-rounds, recreational activities and stalls selling trinkets and delicious local food.

8.Janmashtami

The Janmashtami Festival is celebrated throughout the country to mark Lord Krishna’s birth. Festivities in Gujarat, however, hold a special place as it is home to Krishna’s ancient kingdom, Dwarka. People celebrate this day by singing, dancing and chanting hymns, while an idol of Lord Krishna is placed in a cradle with a thread tied to turn it into a swing. As part of the festival, dahi handi (a pot filled with yogurt)breaking competitions are held across the state. Participants form a pyramid in an attempt to crack the pot and spill the yogurt, which is then offered to everyone as prasad.

chole bhature recipe | chhole bhature | |

chole bhature recipe | chhole bhature |  |

chole bhature recipe | chhole bhature | chana bhatura | chola batura with detailed photo and video recipe. a tasty meal combo recipe made with spicy and flavoured chana masala with a deep-fried puri. it is a popular street food meal in northern india, particularly in the punjab, delhi area, but also in rawalpindi pakistan. it is generally eaten as a breakfast dish with yoghurt based beverage lassi, but can be served any time of the day for a complete and satisfying meal.

chole bhature recipe | chhole bhature | chana bhatura | chola batura with step by step photo and video recipe. indian flatbreads are very commonly used across india for different types of meal. these are generally made with wheat or plain flour, but can also be made with other types of flour and served with a spicy combo curry. one such perfectly balanced curry and bread combo from north india is the chole bhature recipe, known for its spice and tangy flavour combo.

well many have this basic question, what is the difference between a puri and a bhatura. as a matter of fact, even i had this basic question while i was in school/college. for me, poori was small and homemade whereas bhatura is big and hence only served in restaurants or hotels. however, i gradually started realizing the fundamentals and difference between these 2 recipes. the main difference is the use of flour. the bhature is made with plain flour or maida flour, whereas poori is generally made with wheat flour. in addition the batura has the additional leavening agent, i.e baking soda. it helps the dough to make it rise and also inflate while deep frying. some even prefer to add yeast, but i personally recommend to use baking soda for better taste and flavour. with respect to the curry, it is a simple chana masala and the combination of these 2 makes an ideal meal.

furthermore, i would also like to add some more tips, suggestions and variations to the popular chole bhature recipe. firstly, you may also prepare the same batura with wheat flour as an alternative to plain flour. while the wheat flour can be a healthy alternative, but you may not get the same texture and taste like maida. for wheat flour, you can follow the same steps and procedures. secondly, while deep frying the bhatura, ensure the flame has to be high and also the oil has to be super hot. you may test the oil by dropping a small portion of the dough and it has to come to the top immediately. lastly, while preparing the chana masala or chole, do not forget to add the ghee tempering on top of the prepared curry. this is for the fact that it helps to reduce the spice heat and balance the flavour.
